This a truly unique Santa Clara Pueblo redware jar with an elongated neck and a square opening. The jar is expertly decorated with geometric, and traditional serpent/lizard designs carved into the red clay. The delicate carvings are highlighted with a buff-colored slip. The jar is small measuring 3 ¾” in diameter by 3” in height, but it’s big on beauty.
This exceptional piece of art is signed by Marion Rose (born in 1950) who specializes in creating traditionally formed, sgraffito two-tone bowls and jars. She uses several names to sign her work including Marian Rose Naranjo, and Mario Naranjo; in the 1970’s she created pottery with Ernest Naranjo, and in the 1990’s she made pottery for Kevin Naranjo. When collaborating she signed her work with her co-workers.
The jar was purchased at auction (sticker still attached) in the 1980s-1990s, and has had one owner since. The jar has been on display in a non-smoking home in an open, yet protective display case. The vessel would be perfect for the current popular farmhouse style, or anywhere there is a desire for texture, ethnic art, geometric symmetry, or a wish for natural earthy elements.
