This is a lovely vintage blackware Santa Clara vessel. This is a miniature vessel measuring 2 1/4" in diameter by 1 7/8" in height. Although small in size, it is huge in personality. The bowl is decorated with two incised bear paw prints, one on each side. The traditional bear paw design is also reminiscent of a sweet smiley face. Francis often used traditional designs such as bear prints, water serpents, kiva steps, feathers, and other nature motifs in her designs. The bowl was formed and fired using traditional methods. There are some scratches, as shown, but otherwise the bowl is in good condition with no chips, or cracks.
This vessel was created by recognized potter Francis Salazar (1936-2002), but the signature is difficult to read. Frances Salazar was a daughter of noted potter Flora Naranjo. Francis Salazar has won awards and recognition through prestigious venues including the Heard Museum in Phoenix, the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos, and at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Santa Clara Pueblo pottery in general is highly regarded and sought after for its excellent quality craftmanship and eye-catching designs.
The vessel was purchased at auction in the 1980s and has had one owner since. The vessel has been on display in a non-smoking home in an open, yet protective display case. The vessel would be perfect for the current popular white decor/dark contrast farmhouse style, or anywhere there is a desire for texture, ethnic art, geometric symmetry, or a wish for natural earthy elements.

Care and Use
This vintage piece of pottery is designed as art. As such, it should not be used to hold or carry water such as being used as a vase for flowers or as a pot to grow plants.
Do not clean with water or any solvents. To clean, dust lightly taking care not to scratch the surface. Use of water or liquid will ruin the design and patina of the pottery.
