What are the words to describe this piece of pottery…Intriguing? Adorable? Curious? Captivating? This bird, possibly an owl, vessel appears to be old and has wear and damage as would be expected of an old piece. However, its age is not known, nor is its origin. The vessel measures 3 inches in height.

The vessel is clay painted with brown and red on white. It appears to be of a bird, but it may be of a different animal. The vessel has simple line designs on its stomach, and an attempt at realistic eyes, and a clay-formed beak (?). Perhaps the “V” shape in the back represents a tail? This small vessel may have been used for storage.

Regardless of its origin and age, the vessel is charming. It was purchased at a Native American auction in the 1980s-1990s (sticker still attached). Although purchased at a Native American auction, its origin and age are unknown and it may not be Native American. Since purchase at the auction, it has had only one owner. The vessel has been on display in a non-smoking home in an open, yet protective display case. The vessel would be perfect for the current popular farmhouse style, or anywhere there is a desire for texture, ethnic art, geometric symmetry, or a wish for natural earthy elements.

Old Vessel in Shape of Animal - Possibly a Bird. Possible Effigy Vessel.
