This vessel might be designed to look like a bird. The top opening seems to depict a bird crest, ridges on the side seem to depict wings, a beak is clearly evident, but no tail is present. The base has three “feet” each with a hole, which seems to imply it was a rattle. However, the purpose of the vessel is unknown. There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. The vessel measures 8 inches in height. It has signs of wear that would be expected of an old piece.
Regardless of its origin and age, the vessel is intriguing. It was purchased at a Native American auction in the 1980s-1990s. Although purchased at a Native American auction its purpose, origin and age are unknown and it may not be Native American. Since purchase at the auction, it has had only one owner. The vessel has been on display in a non-smoking home in an open, yet protective display case. The vessel would be perfect for the current popular farmhouse style, or anywhere there is a desire for texture, ethnic art, geometric symmetry, or a wish for natural earthy elements.
Bird Vessel. Appears Old. Origin Unknown
